Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about this template.

What is a staff appraisal template for in hospitality?

It lets you assess the performance of waiters, cooks, receptionists, supervisors and other roles against clear criteria. You can record strengths, areas to improve, scores per skill and concrete follow-up actions, so the appraisal does not rest only on gut feeling or on whatever went wrong in the last service.

Which skills should I assess in a restaurant or café?

The template includes the skills that matter most in hospitality: punctuality, quality of service, technical skill, teamwork, attitude towards customers and compliance with HACCP procedures. Depending on the role you can add upselling, leadership, complaint handling, cash handling, keeping a tidy section or confidence on the POS.

How often should I carry out performance reviews?

The most practical approach is a light review every month or two for new starters and a fuller appraisal every quarter or six months. For critical roles or during high season it is worth reviewing more often, so you catch training needs before they affect service, reviews or staff turnover.

How do I use the improvement plan in the template?

After scoring the skills, pick one or two specific priorities, define an observable action, assign someone to support it and set a review date. For example: improve upselling, tighten up the allergen procedure or work on communication at the pass. The aim is to turn the appraisal into real follow-up, not just a score.

Does it work for hotels and groups with several sites?

Yes. The template lets you record site, shift, role and appraiser, so it works for independent restaurants, cafés, hotels and hospitality groups. You can filter by site or manager to compare training needs, spot internal talent and plan promotions or extra staff.
